User documentation

What is FLAC?

FLAC stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec, an audio format similar to MP3, but lossless, meaning that audio is compressed in FLAC without any loss in quality. This is similar to how Zip works, except with FLAC you will get much better compression because it is designed specifically for audio, and you can play back compressed FLAC files in your favourite player (or your car or home stereo, see supported devices) just like you would an MP3 file.

FLAC stands out as the fastest and most widely supported lossless audio codec, and the only one that at once is non-proprietary, is unencumbered by patents, has an open-source reference implementation, has a well documented format and API, and has several other independent implementations.

The XMMS plugin is missing in our current configurations.

There is web-based documentation for FLAC.

EasyConfig:

Technical documentation

General instructions

  • Ogg is an optional but highly recommended dependency.

  • XMMS is an optional dependency that we did not include given that it is of little use on a cluster.

EasyConfig

Version 1.3.3 from CPE 21.06 on

  • Our EasyConfig is a combination of the EasyBuilders one and the one used at the University of Antwerpen.

Version 1.3.4 from CPE 22.06 on

  • The EasyConfig is a trivial update of the 1.3.3 one.

Version 1.4.2 from CPE 22.12 on

  • The EasyConfig is a trivial update of the 1.3.4 one but we copied the improved sanity check from the EasyBuilders one.

Archived EasyConfigs

The EasyConfigs below are additonal easyconfigs that are not directly available on the system for installation. Users are advised to use the newer ones and these archived ones are unsupported. They are still provided as a source of information should you need this, e.g., to understand the configuration that was used for earlier work on the system.
